Tips for Proper Camping Etiquette

Whether you are an experienced camper or a camping novice, it’s always important to remember your manners when you are out in nature and respect those around you and the environment. We’ve got some great tips for proper camping etiquette.

Cleanliness is key.

Keeping a clean campsite is essential, not just because it looks nice but also because a messy campsite can be a safety hazard. Food and garbage can attract unwanted visitors like bugs and wild animals. So, make sure food is stored correctly and trash is disposed of at the end of each day. Plus, tear-down will be a breeze at the end of your stay if you have kept a tidy campsite throughout.

Keep the noise to a minimum.

Noise complaints are probably the number one grievance that campground managers get. Without walls to dampen sound, outdoor noise travels further than you might think. Be respectful of those around you and be mindful of your volume level when hanging out at your campsite.

If your campground has quiet hours, be sure to respect them (it’s 10 p.m. – 8 a.m. here at Lake George Campsites). If there are no designated quiet hours, the general rule of thumb is that 10 p.m. signals “quiet time.”

Stay confined to your campsite.

You pay for a designated campsite, so you should stick to that space while you are camping to be fair to all of the other campers. You wouldn’t want someone walking into your house unannounced; the same goes for campsites. Even if an adjoining campsite looks vacant, someone may be setting up after hours, so it’s best to avoid walking around and spreading out into that space.

Follow campground rules and regulations.

Make sure you and your guests are mindful of any campground rules and regulations where you are staying. More than likely, you will be asked to sign an acknowledgment of the rules when you check in to your campsite.  At Lake George Campsites, guests are given a brochure detailing our campground rules upon check-in. This includes our visitor policy, parental responsibilities, general campground rules, pool rules, speed limit rules, and our pet policy.

Fire safety is of the utmost importance.

Campfires are an essential part of the camping experience, but they can be extremely dangerous if fire safety is not top of mind. NEVER leave your fire unattended. Make sure your campfire is fully extinguished before you head to bed at night – do not leave it smoldering. Don’t burn your trash. Only build fires in designated fire rings/pits and stick to firewood. At Lake George Campsites, we sell bundles of firewood right in our camp store, and we will even deliver it right to your campsite, so you don’t have to lug it through the campground!

Try to limit WiFi usage.

We understand that you will likely need to use WiFi at some point during your camping trip, but one of the best parts of spending time in the great outdoors is being able to truly unplug. While many campgrounds are equipped with WiFi these days, it’s often limited and slow due to the remote location and natural surroundings. Extended WiFi use can make it difficult for other campers to access the service, so put down that iPad and look up at the stars instead!
